about

I (Trevor) sketched these lyrics out a few years ago on a prayer retreat where I was able to pray the stations of the cross every morning for three days. Meditating on the suffering of Christ in that way brought me face to face with the mystery of it all—the creator of the universe becoming as his creation to be killed by his creation using a tree and nails he created so that he could rescue his creation.

We were very excited to get to record this for an upcoming video project with Chris Scherf of www.secondlookfilms.com.

lyrics

Way of Sorrow

Ruler of worlds unknown, in mock a scepter given;
On earth a cruel joke held by the King of Heaven.
Now ascending to his royal throne,
As thorns pierce his beaten brow,
The coronation march begins; the crown of life for us he wins.

Created by his Word, the wood upon his back is thrust.
Now stumbling in the dirt, the form he fashioned from the dust.
Like a lamb led to the altar stone,
White and blameless for the slaughter.
Yet he the willing sacrifice, creator now for creature dies.

Hosanna, hosanna, blessed is he;
Hosanna, hosanna, he walked that road for me.

And now he turns uphill, ascends Golgotha’s mountain.
And now the hammer falls, and bursts forth a holy fountain.
What man can pierce the hand of God,
Stretched down in love to save us all?
Wounds large enough to hold my sin are opened up to let them in.

He left the gates of Heav’n to walk the way of sorrow.
Once in communion sweet, forsaken on the morrow.
But the joy on which he fixed his eyes,
Returning to the Father’s house,
With gladness we are welcomed in, for he has brought us home with him.

Hosanna, hosanna, blessed is he;
Hosanna, hosanna, he walked that road for me.
